Hirakud dam is situted about 12 km from Hirakud railway station and 15 km from sambalpur town of odisha.This project built across the Mahanadi. This dan is longest dam in the world.The project provides 3,90,000 acres irrigation of sambalpur,bargarh,subarnapur district. 307.5 mw power generate through its two power houses at burla and flood protection to 5000 sq miles of delta Mahanadi .Power generation and irrigation started in the year 1956.The main dam having an overall length of 4.8 km spans between two hills, one hill is at Burla and another hill is at Hirakud.At the top of the Hirakud hill a Minar has been located named Gandhi Minar and Neheru Minar at the top of the Burla hill.
